When we began to renovate the cottage in 2016, it was exciting but also a little strange to be changing the family home that had always had the front door facing the road to welcome friends and neighbours straight into the kitchen with its ferocious range blazing.

The thatched roof was long gone by then, but the deep walls at the front of the cottage were still constructed with the stones from the original build.  And to this day, they are still there in the bedrooms.

To our amusement during the renovations we uncovered inside them a bottle of whisky – presumably hidden after an evening’s entertainment and then forgotten!

As a nod to the family who lived here for many generations before, we decided to keep it in place – a little bit of old Hebridean life forever in the heart of the cottage.

Here’s how the cottage looked originally and now.
